Volunteer Week in The East Village: Meet Eleni

Eleni Kottos is the type of person that makes Monday mornings feel like Friday afternoons. This bubbly volunteer works the front counter at the Hastings Sunrise Community Policing Centre as part of their Information and Community Assistance program where she and other volunteers actively work to resolve community members’ qualms and questions.

Eleni has been with the HSCPC for less than a year, but her roots in the community run deep. She’s a resident of the East Village and combines her love of community and interest of crime and safety all at the HSCPC. Eleni became a volunteer because she “wanted to be part of a team that upholds its member to high level standards and wanted to engage more with the community.”

When asked about her favourite part of volunteering, without missing a beat she beams, “the people!” Eleni explains that volunteering at the HSCPC has been valuable to gaining personal, social, and professional skills due to the unique interactions she experiences behind the counter.

Eleni strongly encourages others to volunteer at the CPC, “Do it!” She adds, “It’s so much fun. I didn’t realize how involved the CPC was in this area and how many programs they offer.”

When she is not volunteering or teaching at the YMCA, Eleni can often be found either running the track at Empire Field or exploring the neighbourhood with a Chatime lychee black tea in hand.
