Volunteer Week in The East Village: Meet José

José has been a volunteer at the VGH Thrift Store for just over a year as a cashier. Like many of the volunteers, José wears many hats. One minute he will be pricing items and the next he’ll be helping a customer find exactly what they’re looking for.

When we asked José what made him decide to volunteer, he simply explained, “It makes me happy to feel helpful.” José explained that volunteering at the thrift store has also improved his English substantially from interacting with all the other volunteers and customers. “This is the best place to volunteer!” “and it is because of the other volunteers and the customers. I love the people.”

As an East Village resident, when José isn’t volunteering you can find him browsing the local Chinese markets along Hastings searching for the best produce or cycling in the neighbourhood.
