Meet Gordon and Miriam, proprietors at the hotly anticipated Odd Society Spirits craft distillery, set to open in early October. Gordon, who distilled as far back as high school, holds a masters degree in brewing and distilling from Heriot Watt University in Scotland, and Miriam, a self-employed entrepreneur, handles the marketing side of the business. The husband and wife team have been quietly leasing the unassuming spot at 1725 Powell for over a year. “This is one of the few areas of Vancouver where you’re allowed to do what we’re doing,” said Gordon. “It’s nice to be part of the alcohol manufacturing community that has developed here.” In fact, the distillers are already relying on their neighbours, Coal Harbour Brewing Company and Storm Brewing, for a supply of wort (the liquid extracted during the mashing process in brewing).
