Shift Delivery

Shift Delivery is a unique pedal powered transportation system based out of East Van. The idea was born out of an idea that came to co-creator Ben Wells while he was taking a social enterprise class at Simon Fraser University.  “It was group idea,” says Wells. “(But) members have now moved on from Shift. Myself and Robyn are the remaining co-owners. We also have a mechanic and seven drivers.” “In our first year, we had a lot of support from the education community and all sorts of different places,” says Ben. “The City of Vancouver was a huge supporter, (and) also Vancity – as they helped us with funding through grants, which really helped us get started.” These days the company handles costs and other business decisions independently. Offering reliable service for popular local companies such as SPUD, Mills, Foodee, and many others, Ben and Robyn now currently offer delivery for over a dozen different well-known companies in the city.   When it comes to community events, Shift loves getting involved whenever possible. “We love to take part in multiple community events around the city, especially bike focused events like “Car Free Day,” Ben says. “Bike to Work Week (too) – we like being involved and putting effort in encouraging people to take part in biking. These events also completely align with our business and what we are trying to promote.”Ben-Moriah-Robyn_with_trike2015 When we ask Ben what he loves most about his work, he says building relationships with clients and customers is number one. “My favourite part about my job is the happy and unique interactions I get to have on a day to day basis, when making deliveries, and when engaging with public and clients. The tricycles unique and attract attention so I get to talk to people about them and the business – which I enjoy.  Cycling is also a hobby obviously for Ben – “it’s my favourite way to get around”. After making the move to their current Powell Street location last September from a small studio on Parker Street, Ben says the East Village is an ideal location for the business, based purely on it’s easy access to the downtown core. “(It’s) great for our business but also our staff as a lot of our employees live in the area,” Ben explains. “Our neighbours are also super friendly and it is great to have great coffee nearby (JJ Bean). It is also exciting to see this neighbourhood change. More small and innovative businesses are taking root here.  We are excited to be in this space for a few years and to help support our community.” You can learn more about Shift Delivery on their website, and don’t forget to stay social through Instagram, Facebook and Twitter.
