8 East Village Chinese Restaurants and Bakeries

Bring on the Dumplings, egg tarts, red money envelopes and endless eating. On February 8th it’s Chinese New Year and we thought we would put together a list of our local Chinese restaurants and bakeries for you to try before the new year. On Lok On Lok Restaurant & Won-Ton House – 2010 E Hastings St, Vancouver, BC V5L 1T8 P:(604) 253-3656 Roxie D on Zomato – “Old school decor keeps the price down! Been dining here for over 25 years & have NEVER been disappointed; mediocre service but Great food. Greasy Canadian style chinese food. The Crispy Noodle Chicken Chow Mein is a MUST try, it’s not on the menu but they’ll know what you’re talking about. Incredible WonTon Soup. Love love love this greasy chinese spoon.” Bent S on Yelp “I’ve been coming here for 30 years and for the most part the food has been good portions are plenty and the cost is below average i don’t go for the atmosphere the won tons are made in house with whole shrimp and chunks of pork the won ton noodle soup is one of my favourites” Kayla D on Trip Advisor – “Worth every penny. 6$ for a filling bowl of soup. The wontons are to die for. Real big juice shrimp, not just mechanically separated bottom feeder meat. I eat two in the store and one to go. Been operational since my mom was a kid.”

Van Dragon Chinese Restaurant – 2163 E Hastings St, Vancouver, BC V5L 1V2 Jeff H on Yelp – “I’ve been to Van Dragon since it was Dung Sing Chin before and International Restaurant before that, and never has the food been this good. All of their traditional dishes are on point, and they do a couple of other ones especially well.” Sandi L on Yelp – “I agree w/Jeff H’s review. Went today for the first time for dim-sum w/family & talk about bang for your buck! Parking lot was packed full and had to park two blks away but if persistent you can find decent enough parking somewhere along the neighborhood. Definitely would not stop us from coming back. ” Penny Restaurant Gold Penny Restaurant – 2060 E Hastings St, Vancouver, BC V5L 4L5 P:(604) 258-4128 K_andy on Zomato – “Good Value for Money. Food portions and quality is very good for the prices! Would Recommend!” C.H. on Yelp – “Came here on two separate visits recently, service was prompt and fast. Food arrived pipping hot and we left home with leftovers. I even tried the congee and it was very solid for Chinese standards with quality slices of pork and one preserved duck egg. The Chinese donut was crispy and went well with the congee. My favourite comfort food combo.” james on hastings James on Hastings – 2683 E Hastings St, Vancouver, BC V5K 3W8 P: (604) 255-3188 Michael Kwan on Zomato – ” It doesn’t look like much from the outside, but James is a solid choice for its lunch special and late night hours. If you’ve got hankering for some soup noodles, congee, or even some typical HK style cafe dishes, James doesn’t disappoint. Prices are on point too. A great place to hit up at midnight.” Kieran C. on Yelp – ” the Peking duck was standout, scallops were awesome, and food was generally a step up in flavor from regular Chinese restaurants. They get seasoning right where some places over/under do it. This is some of the better Chinese food in Vancouver, regardless of price point.” IMG_8207Pelican Seafood Restaurant – 1895 E Hastings St, Vancouver, BC V5L 1T3 P: (604) 251-3395 Marv Wong on Zomato – “Have went here a couple times for dinner, and everytime it have went really well, although i have heard from my friends that there are a couple of complaints here and there towards the service. But so far for me it have been good, and maybe i didn’t care much about the service much, and also going here means eating atleast decent chinese food you can expect that.” Jessie L. on Yelp – “My wife and I were visiting our friends in Vancouver, who suggested we go to dim sum for dinner – they knew the perfect place. We arrived at about 8:45 and were seated and handed menus that had about everything you could ever ask for at a Chinese restaurant – except dim sum. We were pretty set on wanting that and were pretty disappointed, when one of my girlfriends got up to ask someone – we believe it was either the manager or the owner – if and when they did dim sum. The gentleman said it started at 9:30, but he would be more than happy to let us take dim sum menus and order now. It was so nice of him – definitely something he didn’t have to do but was more than happy to!” Antoni G. on Trip Advisor – “My dad’s relatives figured that I would be in Vancouver for New Year’s, so they decided to treat me out to a New Year’s Dinner in this restaurant and everything about was great. What really sold it for us was the awesome and warm-hearted service by the people running this place.” hong hongHong Hong Bakery – 2449 E Hastings St, Vancouver, BC V5K 1Y8 P: (604) 253-8826 Kayla D on trip Advisor – “This bakery is the absolute best. It has been open for many many years. It is cash only, but it is no a bother since there are several banks close by on the street. My absolute favorite is the Coconut Buns. Everything is made fresh every day and is better then what grandma makes” W.M. on Yelp – “I’ve passed by this long time bakery many times because of the papered up window. It looked like it was going out of business.  A family member told me about Hong Hong’s egg tart. I finally tried it and I was amazed how good it tasted. They’re smaller than most but the price was 2 for $1.20. It was warm and the crust was flaky and light. It’s similar to egg tarts you find at dim sum. I’m going to go back and try their other baked goods and get more egg tarts. They do sell out quickly I was told.  Cash only.” Pine House BakeryPine House Bakery – 2462 E Hastings St, Vancouver, BC V5K 1Y8 P: (604) 215-3370 Nelson C. on Yelp – “This has been my family’s bakery for a few years now.  They do have a location in Chinatown but my family comes to this one often.  I love the pineapple buns here and the glazed pork buns.   If they have it, they have this minced pork/meat bun which is very good but frequently sold out.   The custard tarts here are also delicious.   The baked goods here bring back very fond and happy family memories.  Pricing as mentioned in previous reviews is very reasonable.”
