Mother and Daughter Mornings at East Cafe

Mother and Daughter Mornings at East Cafe

My weekday mornings have quickly become one of my most cherished routines.

Since returning to Vancouver, my mom and I have been playing catch-up for all the time I was away at university. Our early morning drives to work have given us some extra time to chit-chat and enjoy the unique shops around the neighbourhood. Through these early morning ventures, we were led to discover a special cafe in Hastings-Sunrise.

East Cafe, situated on the corner of Hastings Street and Nanaimo Street, became a favorite of ours to savor our time together. The cafe is filled with random knick-knacks and vintage furniture, which my mom adores due to her passion for thrifting. With old books acting as stands for baked goods, antique lamps lighting the room, and rustic chairs placed by large windows, the space instantly feels warm and inviting.

While the atmosphere is a selling point, the array of options keeps us coming back. Coffees, teas, baked goods, sandwiches, and even vegan options are provided. On our first visit, my mom- being such a tea fan- ordered her usual: the Earl Grey. I, on the other hand, wanted to go for something a bit more filling, and decided on the vegan blueberry scone.

When it came down to ordering, the service was absolutely wonderful. The baristas were welcoming and approachable, and even entertained my mom’s interest in their thrifted decor. When they kindly brought our order to us, my mom was delighted to find out she was given her own teapot. Meanwhile, I enjoyed my blueberry scone, which had a perfect level of sweetness, and a soft, fluffy interior.

Since then, East Cafe has become our go-to spot before work, prompting us to try a handful of their baked goods. The vegan lemon loaf, earl grey scone, and banana bread loaf have been a few of our favourites recently, but we have yet to try them all.

Beyond great treats, what truly sets this cafe apart is its focus on building community. The neighbourly feel is apparent the moment you walk in, with customers coming in to chat with the baristas and their City Smiles events displayed on boards. Events such as open mic, book club, and Sunday jazz, highlight that this cafe isn’t just a coffee shop, but a place promoting connection. Their City Smiles Initiative is also a wonderful form of advocacy- having served over 5,466 unhoused people in the area to date. Furthermore, knowing that the East Cafe has embedded unity and kindness into its business, spending time together there feels even more meaningful.
